Tip 14.  Agree to/on/for?

Which combination correctly completes these sentences? (Only ONE is correct)

1. If you would like to use this software, you must first agree .................... the terms of the licence agreement.

2. I don't think they're going to make very good business partners: they can't even agree .................... the colour of the paint for the office!

A. for / for

B. to / on

Correct answer!

Comment:

Use AGREE TO when saying you can accept a condition suggested by another person.

E.g.: "I am afraid we can't agree to that - my boss would never approve it."

Use AGREE ON when talking about the subject of the discussion.

Compare:

"The parties took a long time to AGREE ON the choice of language for the contract." (The sentence tells us what the discussion was about, but not which language was chosen.)

with

"The seller finally AGREED TO contract the being in English, even though his preference had been for Polish." (This sentence tells us exactly what the seller said 'yes' to).

What about 'agree FOR'?

This is a common error that results from direct translation from Polish (and other languages).

C. on / to

D. on / for
