Tip 17.  Amounts

Which of the following phrases completes this sentence MOST CLEARLY?

NOTE: more than one option is GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT.

As agreed, we will be sending you an invoice .................... EUR 5000 for our work on this project.

A. that amounts to

Wrong answer, try again!

B. for the amount of

Wrong answer, try again!

C. in the amount of

Wrong answer, try again!

D. amounting to

Wrong answer, try again!

E. for

Correct answer!

Comment:

Option E is both correct and clear – 'invoice for EUR X' follows the KISS principle ('Keep it short and simple', or 'Keep it simple, stupid!')

Options B and C both are correct, but for everyday writing they are too formal and simply unnecessary.

Options A and D use the verb ‘to amount to', which means "the total when you add several amounts together".
