Tip 12.  Ending an email in the right tone

Next week you are meeting a long-standing client in person for the first time. Your contact with her has always been pleasant, but it has been restricted to email and a few short calls.

Which option best ends your email to her?

Note: All three sentences are grammatically correct.

A. I am looking forward to seeing you next week.

Wrong answer, try again!

B. I look forward to seeing you next week.

Wrong answer, try again!

C. Looking forward to seeing you next week.

Correct answer!

Comment:

Option C expresses the right message (you are happy that you will soon be meeting this person) in the right tone (you know each other and get along well).

Option B expresses the same sentiment (happiness at the prospect of seeing your client) but uses a more formal tone. As such, it would be suitable to end an email to someone with whom you have only exchanged formal correspondence or usually address as Mr, Mrs, Miss or Ms.

Option A is simply a statement of fact, so whilst you could write it in an email (e.g. to a friend or family member) it isn't suitable for ending correspondence.
