Exemption and exception are commonly confused.
An exception is someone or something a rule or general statement does not apply to.
E.g. "I usually find such highly technical presentations send me to sleep, but hers was an exception."
'Exemption' means "being free of an obligation or liability imposed on others" (Oxford Dictionary of English).
E.g. a tax exemption: being released from the obligation to pay tax on something.
