Tip 15.  Polite requests using 'appreciate'

Which of options A, B or C would be the grammatically correct sentence opening to use with the following phrase:

.................... you could let me know which day you would prefer for our meeting.

A. I would be appreciate if

Wrong answer, try again!

B. I would appreciate if

Wrong answer, try again!

C. I would appreciate it if

Correct answer!

Comment:

The only correct phrase here is: "I would appreciate IT if you COULD ..."

When using the verb 'appreciate', remember that it needs an object (the 'what' in who does what). In this phrase, the word 'it' is the object.

Option A (a common error) may be the result of confusing 'would appreciate it if' with 'would be grateful if'

Option B is very commonly used by non-native speakers, but is ungrammatical.
