Tip 34.  Style matters...

Which option completes the sentence in the Plain English?

Now the mistake has been discovered, we need to...

A. ...examine what steps can be undertaken to minimize its negative consequences.

Wrong answer, try again!

B. ...look at what can be done to limit the damage it does.

Wrong answer, try again!

C. ...decide how we can limit the damage.

Correct answer!

Comment:

STYLE MATTERS. Your writing style can make the difference between:

  • instructing and confusing
  • persuading or boring

Option A is too wordy and formalistic.

Option B is too abstract ('looking at' sounds natural but does not necessarily result in action; the passive 'what can be done' avoids responsibility).

Remember:

  • Keep it short and simple
  • Use the active voice unless you have a good reason not to.
